Your focus needs more focus

The title of this blog is a line from The Karate Kid and it sums up this piece beautifully. When changing career or starting a business I am sure I could tell you that ‘Your focus needs more focus!’.

Successful people understand the nuances of focus. Having and keeping a very clear idea of what you are trying to accomplish in the long term and basing decisions on whether a particular action is going to help or hinder that, is one of the important elements to learn when changing careers.

In his book “Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less”, Greg McKeown illustrates why focus is so important. Knowing what you are trying to achieve and being selective with what you choose to devote your time to is a far more effective way of being than the usual scatter gun approach that most of us use.

Top tips for focus:

• Be more selfish with what you say yes to • Keep in mind what you are trying to achieve and ask yourself, will this bring me one step closer • Have action lists and mini goals to keep you on track • Carve out some time every day to work on your new business and protect it fiercely

You only have 24 hours in any given day – and if like me you need at least 10 hours sleep, that leaves you with 14. Factor in family, exercise, friends, eating, hobbies, your day job etc etc and the time becomes less and less.

We live in a very chaotic world where we are so used to being stretched to our limits. Take the pressure off, have some focus and only say yes to things which are going to bring you closer to your goal of changing careers or starting your business.

The book I mentioned above is definitely worth a read https://gregmckeown.com/book.
